Why does this blue stone have yellow light coming out of it?

You’d expect this cloudy blue glass to throw a blue light onto its surroundings. The light it throws, though, is clearly a bright orange-yellow. Can you guess why?

How can a light change from blue to orange? The Tyndall Effect shines through.

Cabin Pressure Poster Giveaway!

For some reason I have 3,000 followers. I’m not sure why, but to say thanks to all the stewards, stewardesses, captains, first officers, and men-with-vens that make up the Cabin Crew, I’m going to give away some Cabin Pressure posters!

THE RULES:

  • When you see a yellow car, say yellow car.
  • To enter, reblog this post. Likes are lovely, but don’t count.
  • You can reblog once per day.
  • You don’t have to be following me.
  • The giveaway will run until Friday, May 4, 2012, at 21:00 EST. Reblogs after that time won’t count.
  • I’ll use a random number generator to pick one winner. You must have your ask box open for me to contact you. If you don’t get back to me within 48 hours, I’ll pick another winner.

THE CARGO:

  • The winner has their choice of one medium-sized poster print and one small or mini-sized poster print from my Society6 shop. Those sizes are listed in the shop.
  • I’ll ship directly from Society6 to you. They ship worldwide, but make sure they ship to your country if you’re unsure!
  • If you’d like a poster of one of my Cabin Pressure graphics that is not in my Society6 shop, we’ll talk. Most of the graphics that aren’t in my shop are gifs/animations, but if you really want one of those, we can work something out.

Good luck, and thank you for flying MJN Air!

Why Old Books Smell Good
“Lignin, the stuff that prevents all trees from adopting the weeping habit, is a polymer made up of units that are closely related to vanillin. When made into paper and stored for years, it breaks down and smells good. Which is how divine providence has arranged for secondhand bookstores to smell like good quality vanilla absolute, subliminally stoking a hunger for knowledge in all of us.
